The Trouble with M.E.N. Is ....

"We men, too, seem to be down on ourselves as never before. As Michael Elias, co-author of ground-breaking book of male taboos, “MEN Speak the Unspeakable” & key speaker at the Wednesday 7 June debate, said in ‘The Big Issue’; “All men are… bastards, bullies, wimps, unavailable, mummy’s boys, abusers, abandoners, stupid, useless, lazy, dirty, only want one thing! Think of one positive term people use. Does anyone like men? Do we like us ?” We are raised to compete with one another as the price of success, to bully or be bullied; dog eats dog and we fight to get to the top of the heap, stepping on our brothers on the way up.

As men, our ‘traditional’ roles have been gradually eroding and unravelling since the 1950’s, as society has radically changed. Men – and women – were once defined by their roles, he as breadwinner, she as homemaker. But how many of today’s men have been brought up with a male role model present in the picture? How many had a stable and peaceful home and the education that separates the blue from the white collar, the employed from the unemployed?” Michael Elias

With the spate of knife crimes going on, it’s sadly all too timely that 100BMOL covered this topic in this week-ends Community Programes and next week it's members partake in the debate – ‘The Trouble With Men’ which will amongst other things deal with the violence of man, the obvious inability of far too many men to deal with their anger, their issues with means other than violence. What’s the solution to the problem ?
